FADE IN:
EXT. ISLAND DAY
The moon can be seen in the sky visibly burning, turning the sky from its natural blue hue to a faded violet. Yui walks at an even pace with Genevieve trailing behind her. Yui looks around at the main square they’re passing through, everything is empty.
YUI
It’s a fucking ghost town out here.
I guess everyone heard the news report and headed over to the docks too.
Genevieve doesn’t respond.
YUI (CONT'D)
Have you ever been to the mainland,
Viv?
Genevieve shakes her head.
YUI (CONT'D)
It’s...bigger. I remember the
towering buildings and all the crowds. It’s easy to get lost in it.
Genevieve doesn’t respond again.
YUI (CONT'D)
It’s cool if you like that sort of
thing.
They walk again in silence. Genevieve finally speaks.
GENEVIEVE
Why did you leave then?
Yui smiles and sighs in relief.
YUI
Like I said, it’s easy to get lost
in. When you’re on the mainland, in the city, it’s like you’re just a worker ant. And everyone there are other worker ants just going on about their business. A worker ant could die right beside them, and they wouldn’t care. They’d just keep moving, doing what they can for the colony.
GENEVIEVE
...sucks.
YUI
Right? That’s why I like it here on the island. You may not know everybody, but there’s still a sense of community. I can be Yui here, can be a living, breathing person that people know. Not a shell. The people are nice here.
Yui and Genevieve both grimace as if in the same memory.
YUI (CONT'D)
Well, most of them are. I liked my little apartment liked the old lady that would leave watermelons on my doorstep, liked the bird that would screech the hell out of my ears in the morning, liked my job...liked you.
They both stop in their tracks and Genevieve looks up at Yui.
GENEVIEVE
Me?
Yui rolls her eyes.
YUI
Yes, you! I liked seeing your stupid pretty face every time I took my shift. I don’t think you know how beautiful you are, Viv.
Genevieve stares disbelievingly at Yui. Yui clears her throat and looks away.
YUI (CONT'D)
I mean, all the other lifeguards talk about you! Talk about how strong you are, how you help out at the café. And look at you! I used to hope you would take off that stupid jacket at work, just so I can see your arms!
They both blush and Yui laughs.
YUI (CONT'D)
So yeah, I like you. Which is why I want us both to make it off the island, so I can finally ask you out on a date. Can we do that?
The corners of Genevieve’s lips twitch upward as she looks down at her feet.
GENEVIEVE
Yeah.
They both resume their trek.
EXT. ISLAND DOCKS - DAY
Genevieve and Yui make it to the docks a couple of hours before the scheduled departure. Hundreds of people are in long lines leading to each ship. They move to the back of the closest line.
YUI
We made it. Thank goodness.
GENEVIEVE
We still have to get on the ship
and get to the mainland disaster shelter.
YUI
Yeah, but that’s smooth sailing.
The man in front of them turns to them and speaks.
MAN
(Quietly)
It would be if we weren’t all going to die on the way there.
Genevieve and Yui startle.
YUI
What are you talking about?
MAN
The moon is on fire, the last time that happened was after the big bang. What kind of effect do you think
that’s going to have on the earth, huh?
Yui opens her mouth to respond, but he continues.
MAN (CONT'D)
The moon influences our gravitational tilt and our ocean tides. With the amount of combustion that happened from the meteor shower, it’s currently like having a miniature sun close to Earth. That kind of heat is currently burning up our atmosphere, there will be sudden geological shifts.
Genevieve and Yui stare back in shock. Yui comes back to herself.
YUI
And–And how do you know all that?
The man smiles with no warmth.
MAN
Simple. I’m a geologist.
YUI
Okay. What does any of what you
said have to do with getting on the ships?
The man’s smiles drops.
MAN
Tsunamis. Big, big waves are going
to peak in the route the ships are taking. It’s inevitable.
They all fall into silence. Genevieve perks up.
GENEVIEVE
So, if we took another route, could
we still safely get to the mainland?
The man frowns.
MAN
I suppose you could, but you would have to leave from the opposite side of the island and come around, it would be a much longer trip. I also highly doubt the people in charge of these ships will do that.
Genevieve looks determinedly at the man.
GENEVIEVE
But it could still be done, right?
MAN
Theoretically, yes.
Yui looks questioningly at Genevieve.
GENEVIEVE
My dad owns–He used to own a boat,
a seiner. We could take it on this alternative route to avoid the wave.
Yui’s eyes widen and she smiles. Genevieve looks at the man.
GENEVIEVE (CONT'D)
You could come with us?
The man smiles and shakes his head.
MAN
Thank you for the offer, but I’ve
got someone to meet far from here. You two girls should get going. You don’t have much time.
Genevieve and Yui both thank him and head back in the direction of Genevieve’s home. The man watches them run off into the distance.
MAN (CONT'D)
Good luck.
